DDRC Data Dictionary for American Community Survey (ACS)
General Overview
The DDRC has acquired demographic data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS), spanning the years 2010 to 2022. This dataset is a subset of the full ACS data, including only state- and county-level estimates for age, race, and sex, along with the margins of error for these estimates. The following document outlines the acquired data and provides a comprehensive data dictionary to assist with data interpretation. This dataset is intended to offer valuable insights into population and demographic changes, supporting research and analysis efforts across the region.
The data provided reflects information available from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey at the time of download. Please note that this data may be updated or corrected without prior notice as new information becomes available.
Overview of the American Community Survey (ACS) Demographic Subset
The American Community Survey (ACS) is conducted by the United States Census Bureau. Unlike the decennial (10-year) census, the ACS is carried out monthly and yearly, surveying a representative sample of people, not the total population. The ACS focuses on data related to various aspects of community life, including employment, education, military service, home ownership, as well as other factors such as poverty and transportation availability. This data can be used to identify community needs by highlighting trends and disparities, allowing for targeted interventions and resource allocation based on the specific needs of different areas or populations.
Acquiring the American Community Survey (ACS) Demographic Subset
The DDRC acquired a subset of the ACS dataset that focuses on demographic data (i.e., age, sex, race) for the nation from 2010 to 2022 from the US Census Bureau’s interactive query system. The system allows users to explore US Census Bureau datasets in tables, create maps, and access public use microdata sample (PUMS) files.
